This is being published in the community council Christmas booklet for 2004. It gives an overview of how 2004 went ...

Castlerahan GFC Review of 2004

A Better end to the Year …

2004 was a busy year at all levels no more so than for the Senior team. While there was no silverware won, the Senior team had a very heavy match schedule throughout the year due to the new South Ulster League, revised Senior championship format and Division 1 league matches. This year proved to be very challenging for the panel, due to the number of matches, injury to key players and others stepping up to represent the county teams at various levels. Dealing with these challenges is something any management team and panel have to deal with but this year the going was tough!

The club entered new territory taking part in the inaugural South Ulster League competition with Senior teams from Cavan, Fermanagh, Monaghan and Armagh participating. With fine spring weather, the league got underway with a home match against Carrickmacross. The home side suffered a narrow defeat which unfortunately was the start in a run of defeats to Lisnaskea, Crosserlough and by that stage the team were out of the competition.

Hopes of a return to form were raised when in the opening game of the All County Football League Division 1 Castlerahan secured an away win to a fancied Kingscourt team. However the revival was short lived with a home defeat to Belturbet. Good wins over Knockbride, Ramor Utd & Baileboro late in the season secured Division 1 status for 2005 with two games remaining.

A new Senior championship format was introduced with a 7 team division. The opening game of the championship drew a large crowd to Mountnugent for a local derby with Ramor United. Ramor came away with the win on a 1 point margin. Defeats to Drumgoon, Gowna & Mullahoran left the club staring at relegation. However decisive wins over Denn & Ballymachugh secured Senior status. Next year the club will participate at senior Championship level for the fourth successive year.

It is hoped that the new panel members this year will have gained valuable experience to build on and get some momentum going from the outset next year.

The Reserve team operated out of the Division 1A League and competed in the Reserve Division 1 championship. The scarcity of numbers in the senior panel had a devastating effect on the Reserve team and as a result were outclassed in many games

At under age level the U-14 squad competed very well getting to the U-14 Roinn B final loosing narrowly to Redhills. In the championship Swanlinbar ended our interest at semi-final stage The 13 & U12 squads both competed in Roinn B with the U13 squad losing out at semi-final stage. The U-8 U-10 and U-11 squads continue to develop with coaching on Saturday mornings and competed in a number of local tournaments.

The U16 team competed in Division 1 of the U16 leagues and only secured one win. For the championship they competed in division 2 where they lost out to a better balanced Drumlane side in the semi-final. At minor level Lurgan proved to be the bogey team with Castlerahan suffering defeats to them in the Minor League final and Championship semi-final. However at U-21 Castlerahan gained the upper hand and are now competing for a final place against Erne Gaels.

The club continues to maintain a web-site www.castlerahangfc.com, has a weekly email newsletter updating players and members of the activity within the club. The club also produced regular printed newsletters providing updates on the clubs activities.

The club continues to be represented at county level with Sean Brady playing for Cavan in the National League and U-21 on the championship team. Enda Mulvey was also a member of the U21 panel. Cian Mackey, Daniel Lynch, Paudie Reilly and Ronan Flanagan all represented Cavan on the minor panel for 2004. Fiachra Cork was part of the successful Cavan u16 panel in 2004.

The club held a very successful Social event in October with the running of the popular ‘Who wants to be a Thousandaire’ show in Crover House. Other highlights include the successful running of the Fay tournament sponsored by Reasons with Crosserlough winning outright. The drainage program and floodlighting completed in 2003 has proven to be a great success resulting in much more activity in Fay Park on many dark evenings.

The club would like to thank all those who supported them in fundraising efforts throughout the year via the Blotto, Bingo, 50/50 draw, signs sponsorship, jerseys sponsorship, the Thousandaire show and any contributions in general. Without this continued support the club could not continue to grow and develop as it has in the last number of years. The many people who contribute with their time and energy on a voluntary basis to the training, coaching and preparation of the many teams in the club are the lifeblood of the club. These people along with the club administrators deserve the gratitude of the community.
