Castlerahan 1-11 Crosserlough 2-10 Senior Championship Relegation Playoff League 15-Sep-02
Crosserlough Remain Unbeaten
Crosserlough now top the Senior relegation playoff
group as a result of defeating Castlerahan on Sunday
last in Mountnugent. Given that both neighbouring clubs haven’t contested in the league or championship for over 20 years
it meant there was a competitive edge to the game from the outset and from a slow
start the game produced an entertaining second half for both sets of
supporters. Crosserlough opened their scoring with J.
Crowe, their designated free taker for the game getting his first score in the
2nd minute. R. Reilly added a further point for Crosserlough
when he soled in from the right wing and fisted over the bar from a tight
angle. The Castlerahan forwards were gaining good
possession inside but missed several early chances to put up scores. Crosserlough moved 3 points ahead when J. Crowe converted
his second free of the match. Castlerahan’s opening
score came from
Early Goal
At half time Castlerahan made a number of switches with V. Conaty coming in as a corner forward sub, S. Brady moving to midfield and P. Brady moving into the half back line. From the restart Crosserlough pushed further ahead when from the throw in a ball was delivered inside to M. Higgins who turned and scored a point. With another foul committed J. Crowe increased their lead further with a pointed free. Castlerahan sensing the game was slipping away from them got the boost they needed to reduce their arrears when V. Conaty scored a goal just clipping the inside of the post with a shot after B. Mulvey fisted a pass inside. For Castlerahan S. Brady switched back into full forward and D. Maguire moved to midfield. This switch combined with the goal really worked well in lifting the Castlerahan team as they began to gain better possession at midfield and attack with more frequency. In the 9th minute S. Brady converted a free after B. Mulvey was fouled. S. Brady scored his own earned free in the 12th minute. O. McBride helped level the match when he moved up to attack but was fouled and S. Brady converted the free. Castlerahan moved ahead for the first time in the game when S. Brady soloed in to lob a shot just over the Crosserlough crossbar. Crosserlough then under pressure then produced an attack where E. Reilly’s jersey was pulled inside the penalty area. B. Crowe awarded a penalty and P. Smith slotted it away to push Crosserlough 2 points ahead. At this stage there was a real competitive edge to the game with both teams picking off points adding to an exciting finish. S. Brady converted a free for Castlerahan to leave a point between the teams and but shortly after P. Smith scored an excellent long range point to increase Crosserlough’s lead. S. Brady added a further pointed free after N. Duignan was fouled to leave the minimum between the teams as they approached the final few minutes.
Costly goal
Concentrating on attack Castlerahan were caught on the break for a costly goal. A long high delivery inside and a mix up in the defence resulted in a fortunate Crosserlough goal where the ball was flicked to the net past the advancing Castlerahan keeper C. Clerkin. Despite adding 2 more points from D. Maguire and A. Mulvey Castlerahan ran out of time and Crosserlough came away winners 2-10 to 1-11. Crosserlough move one step closer to the shield final spot but both teams may meet again before the season is over if Castlerahan can bounce back from this defeat.
Best for Castlerahan in defence were J. Lynch & D. Clarke and fine 2nd half performances were given by D. Maguire at midfield and S. Brady in attack. For Crosserlough J. Crowe was very steady at free taking contributing 6 points in total. Good performances were also given by E. Reilly, B. Tully and P. Smith.

Castlerahan 1-8 Lacken 0-12 Senior Championship Plate Final 12-Oct-02
Lacken Finish Stronger
Castlerahan and Lacken met in the
inaugural Senior plate final in
Early Goal
At half time Lacken made 2 substitutions with Colin Sheridan and James Moynagh coming on which added more pace to the Lacken attack through the half. Castlerahan got the start to the second half they needed with a well taken goal from David Maguire after some inter-passing with Enda Mulvey and Sean Brady. Trevor Crowe rallied Lacken by gathering the ball in defence and soloed through to the 21m line and with a short pass to Finbar Reilly he scored from short range. Lacken half back David Donohoe added a long range point in the 11th minute to push Lacken ahead by a point. Not wanting to loose sight of the game Castlerahan equalized when Michael Colwell ran onto a break from Enda Mulvey to score a point. The Lacken subs were proving effective when Colin Sheridan won a number of frees in succession after gaining possession and James Moynagh made his contribution by scoring a point in the 20th minute. Lacken went further ahead when Finbar Reilly was quickest to react when a shot hit the post and he collected to put the rebound over the bar. Sean Brady reduced the arrears for Castlerahan when he converted a free from the side line with a kick out of the hands. David Maguire continued to gain good possession in the Castlerahan attack and added a further point. Castlerahan were punished again for persistent fouling when Finbar Reilly converted a free in the 27th minute. Castlerahan went in search of the equalizing score and it wasn’t until the 31st minute that Nigel Duignan popped up to point and leave the scores level at the full time whistle.
Extra time
With both clubs anxious to get a result extra time was played. After leveling with the last attack, the momentum was with Castlerahan and they went ahead with a point from Enda Mulvey after winning possession at the throw in. Lacken wasted a lot of chances and were it not for a fine save from Castlerahan keeper Charlie Clerkin they would have had the game out of Castlerahan’s reach. Colin Sheridan took over free taking duty from Finbar Reilly and converted two frees in the 10th and 12th minutes. The fading light seemed to have an affect on both teams ability to score as these proved to be the final scores of the game. After a scoreless second half in extra time the final result was Castlerahan 1-8 Lacken 0-12. Vice-Chairman of the Cavan County Board Mr. Pauric Mahon presented the shield to his own club man and Lacken captain Shane McKiernan. Best for Castlerahan were Johnny Lynch , John Flynn in defence and David Maguire in attack. The free taking and general contribution from play of Finbar Reilly and Colin Sheridan was crucial for Lacken in the end.

Drumgoon Defeat Depleted
Castlerahan
Castlerahan 1-6 Drumgoon 1-13
Castlerahan without a
number of regulars continued their poor league run on Saturday evening last
with a home defeat to Drumgoon. Drumgoon
got off to an ideal start with a goal from Paddy McCabe who found himself
unmarked at the edge of the square. Drumgoon
continued to sweep aside the Castlerahan challenge
and had points from Ian Reilly (2) and Michael McDonald in quick succession
after some fine passing movements. Castlerahan at
last got a grip on the game with a point from Alan Mulvey
after 10 minutes. Drumgoon continued to dominate and
had further points from Paddy McCabe and Martin Clerkin.
David Maguire replied with a fisted point for Castlerahan
and Nigel Duignan added another taking a pass from
Paul Farrelly. Paddy McCabe and Jim McNally had
further points for Drumgoon while Keith Fannin tapped over another from a free. Castlerahan
gave themselves a lifeline when Declan Cahill advanced from defence
and his goalward pass was fisted to the net by David
Maguire. Drumgoon finished the half strongly when Ian
Reilly added two points the first from a free and the second from a through
ball from Edward Jackson. This left the half time score Drumgoon
1-10 Castlerahan 1-3.
Scores in the second
half were at a premium as Drumgoon form dipped
considerably and Castlerahan came more into the game.
Nigel Duignan was first to score in the second half
when he pointed after a fine individual run. David Maguire had a long range
point after 10 minutes and Keith Fannin replied with
a point from a free. Drumgoon were guilty of some
wild shooting at this stage and it was left to Paul McCabe to complete their
scoring with two points, one from a fisted effort. Nigel Duignan
brought Castlerahan's tally to an end with a point
leaving the final score Drumgoon 1-13 Castlerahan 1-6.
Best for Drumgoon in defence were Paul Crossan and Keith Fannin with Ian
Reilly and Paddy McCabe doing well throughout the game up front. For Castlerahan Declan Cahill and Peter Fitzpatrick tried hard in defence, with Brian Mulvey coming
out on top at midfield and in attack Nigel Duignan
and David Maguire contributed most of the scores.

Using
this league game as further preparation for the upcoming championship the Killygarry outfit produced a far more determined display to
run out easy winners against the home side on Saturday evening last. The
visitors opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a point from
Niall Smith who latched onto a broken ball on the 13m line. From the outset Donal Thomas commanded midfield and picked the first of a
number of points in the 9th minute when he soloed from midfield to
slot over. Alan Mulvey opened the home teams account
with a pointed free in the 10th minute when Paul Farrelly
was fouled after gaining good possession. Niall Smith added the visitors 3rd
point from a long range free kick. Although Killygarry
were dominating possession the home team still kept in touch with a point from Ciaran Doherty in the 15th minute. Some good passing
between Thomas Leonard and Niall Smith pushed Killygarry
further ahead when the corner forward added Killygarrys
fourth point. The goal that was threatening came in the 17th minute
when Andy McGovern made a fine overhead catch from a long delivery and turned
to get past 2 Castlerahan defenders and blast the
ball to the net. Michael McGovern tapped over from the 21m line to extend Killygarrys lead further. Donal
Thomas added his 2nd point after soloing through to point in the 20th
minute. Killygarry continued to show their
superiority in the run up to half time when Michael McGovern completed their
scoring for the half. To finish off their scoring Castlerahan
called on Alan Mulvey to convert a free after Paul Farrelly was fouled in possession. This left the half time
score Killygarry 1-7 Castlerahan
0-3.
Upon
the restart the home team looked like staging a come back when John Clarke
pointed a long range effort in the opening minute. The revival was short lived
as Niall Smith cancelled out the score with a point after a long fisted
delivering from midfielder Donal Thomas. The same
midfielder was involved in the next 3 scores where he scored one himself from
play and was fouled close to the Castlerahan
goalposts on 2 occasions and free taker Niall Smith punished the home defence both times. The home team faced a further setback
with a goal from Michael McGovern after his attempted kick from long range for
a point slipped in between the keeper and the crossbar. Niall Smith completed
the scoring with a tally of 1-1 from play to leave Killygarry
run out convincing winners. Best for Killygarry were
D. Smith at full back , midfilder Donal
Thomas who carried the ball to great effect and the full forwards of Michael
McGovern and Niall Smith. Castlerahan were short a
number of regulars and will be hoping to return to a full squad in the not too
distant future. Best on the day were Paul Farrelly
and Johnny Lynch.

Castlerahan 0-12 Knockbride

In
the middle of championship season both teams used this league game on Saturday
evening in Ballyjamesduff as an important warm up for
vital championship games in the coming weeks. Both management teams were keen
to start with their strongest teams possible and the game started at a very
fast pace given the difficult conditions underfoot. Knockbride
showed early promise but started off with 3 wides in
the first couple of minutes. Enda Mulvey
opened the scoring for Castlerahan with a point after
Vincent Conaty provided a pass. The visitors evened
the scoring up when Larry Reilly collected a break in midfield and ran through
the Castlerahan defence to
tap over in the 7th minute. In the early stages both defences remained on top and it wasn’t until the 11th
minute that Nigel Duignan launched an attack and was
fouled. Enda Mulvey
converted to give Castlerahan the lead. With Knockbride on top possession wise but failing to take their
scores the Castlerahan management made 2 changes with
Paul Farrelly coming in for Vincent Conaty and Ouray McBride coming on for Mark O’Reilly. Larry
Reilly continued to make runs through the middle and was fouled in the 13th
minute, and resulting free was converted by corner forward Daragh Smith.
Goal
chance taken
The
threatened goal came a minute later when Seamus Lynch grabbed a break on the
45m and soloed through unopposed to shoot low past the Castlerahan
keeper Charlie Clerkin. The goal seemed to spur Castlerahan on and they upped their game as half time
approached. In the 18th minute Nigel Duignan
got the first score of the comeback with Enda Mulvey providing an assist. Inside at full forward Brian Mulvey continued to contest and was fouled in the 24th
minute. Sean Brady pointed the 21m free. Ouray McBride was quickest to react
from a short kick out and intercepted to layoff to Enda
Mulvey who in turn punished the Knockbride
defence with a point. Castlerahan
went in ahead at half time when Paul Farrelly picked
up a pass and was fouled on route to goals. Enda Mulvey again pointed the free to leave the half time score Knockbride 1-2 Castlerahan 0-6.
Second
Half
The
2nd half was a minute under way when Knockbride
leveled scores with Raphael Rodgers passing to Larry Reilly on the wing who
found the target from a difficult angle. Again Knockbride
began to dominate with plenty of attacks but wasting a lot of chances to edge
ahead. John Clarke provided a rallying score for Castlerahan
when he fielded well from a kick out , took one solo and drove over the bar
from the 45m line in the 7th minute. Gaining in confidence the Castlerahan attack tested the Knockbride
keeper Ronan Keaskin twice in quick succession but he
saved both times. Knockbride leveled scores again
when Niall O’Reilly shot for goal but was tipped over by Castlerahan
keeper Charlie Clerkin. Knockbride
pushed ahead when Larry Reilly pointed well from a 45m free. Castlerahans best spell in the game came when Sean Brady
scored a free in the 15th minute after being fouled. Enda Mulvey provided an inside
pass to Paul Brady (Snr) who tapped over one minute later.
Again the home team took its opportunities when Sean Brady soloed through on a
break from midfield to kick from the 45m line high over the bar. Sensing the
game slipping away from them Knockbride stepped up a
gear again. From a high delivery into the square the Castlerahan
square a mix up in defence saw Larry Reilly pick up
the break but was fouled in the tackle. The resulting penalty was hit well but
the Castlerahan keeper pushed over for a point.
Continuing to pile on the pressure Knockbrides next score
came from Raphael Rodgers with Larry Reilly again involved in the build up.
Pushing to level the match the Castlerahan defence were forced into another mistake with Larry Reilly
intercepting a pass. A long range effort hit the inside of the post and stayed
the right side of it to level the match. In the closing minutes Knockbride went ahead when Colm Fitzpatrick was fouled and
Daragh Smith converted the free. In the final minute of normal time Castlerahan salvaged a point when Nigel Duignan
was fouled and took a quick free to Alan Mulvey who
had sneaked up from defence to kick over from
distance. Next day out in the championship both teams will be looking to go one
step further with a win. Best for Knockbride were
Ollie Mulvey and Larry Reilly. For Castlerahan both midfielders Sean Brady and John Clarke
played well, being well supported by Paul Brady (Snr)
and Enda Mulvey up front.

Castlerahan Take Spoils in Close Encounter
Castlerahan 0-12 Lacken 0-11
Castlerahan secured their first win of the 2007 campaign defeating Lacken by the narrowest of margins at the Ballyjamesduff venue. The game, played in perfect conditions condemned Lacken to their first defeat in division one having being promoted last year.
Lacken made an impressive start to the game clocking up three points without reply. Raymond Galligan got the first of these with a superb pint from a sideline kick. This early point was to be a warning to Castlerahan as Galligan was to prove a handful for the home defence for the entire game. Finbarr O’Reilly followed this up with two pointed frees. Three points down after just six minutes Castlerahan started to impose themselves in the middle of the field and Enda Mulvey put the home side on the scoreboard from a pointed free and Nigel Duignan followed this up with the good individual effort. Castlerahan were to level matters in the ninth minute when Ronan Flanagan made a run from the wing back position and his run was well picked out by Fiacra Cork who placed the ball in Flanagan’s path to score the fisted point.
Lacken were served a blow following this when Corner Back Garry McGauren had to be substituted following an injury. After this stoppage the teams exchanged points through Enda Mulvey and Finbarr O’Reilly. With the teams’ level Daniel Lynch found himself in space following a bad ball out of defence but Shane Sheridan in the Lacken goal was up to the task, palming Lynch’s goal bound shot onto the post.
Michael Caldwell then got his name on the score sheet and another pointed free from Enda Mulvey seen Castlerahan go two points up. These points were soon cancelled out when Finbarr O’Reilly again pointed two frees in succession. Both teams again exchanged points before the break to leave things all square at the break.
Lacken started the second half as they did the first, and accumulated a three point lead all frees from the boot of Finbarr O’Reilly. Castlerahan looked in danger of being defeated on home territory at this stage and their chances took a further blow with the loss of Alan Mulvey from centre back with a suspected dislocated shoulder. However his replacement Ciaran Lynch made an instant impact when he was taken down and Enda Mulvey converted the resulting free. Finbarr Brady put three points between the teams once again from a dead ball situation before Nigel Duignan got his second score of the afternoon to leave two points separating the teams with eight minutes left on the clock. Enda Mulvey scored two points in quick succession, the latter of which coming from a good free kick from Ronan Brady in the middle of the field. With the game entering its final minutes Ronan Flanagan linked up well with John Clarke before putting the ball over the bar. Lacken did push on in the latter stages but were unable to break down a resilient defence who found Brian Coleman a good outlet after his introduction.
Castlerahan struggled at times but deserved the win overall. Lacken who scored ten of there eleven points from frees will have to improve up front if they are to compete in Division 1. Best for Castlerahan were Barry Cusack, Ronan Flanagan and Enda Mulvey while Raymond Galligan and Finbarr O’Reilly of Lacken always posed a treat to the Castlerahan defence.
